THE IMPACT OF GOOGLE:

Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?

Google has figured out it's business model since its inception and ultimately helped people find information and resources, including news. Which gave users a variety of sources at an instance. It's popularity has moved people away from traditional news outlets such as TV or radio since the accessibility factor is just more important to people. Also, Google targets news topics based on browser cookies, history and collected data which improves further user experience. Google's advertising model is killing traditional news outlets due to the exponential growth is revenue generate by on-screen advertisements and 3rd implementations into websites.

Find a statistic from the article that illustrates the decline of traditional news media.
From 2000 to 2012 Newspaper advertising declined by more than $40 billion.

Looking at the graph featured in the article, what period has seen the steepest decline in newspaper advertising revenue?
2004 was the steepest decline in newspaper revenue.

Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?

I personally don't think Google is to blame for the decline in newspapers since Google operates an online business and Newspapers operate a print business therefore each industry must face their own challenges and make sure they are not in decline. Just because a company such as Google enters the newspaper market, it does mean that they certainly have control. It is up to the public and audiences to decide which platform they like to use so the fact that newspapers are blaming their competitors is not right.

ARTICLE:

"Obviously, Google is not to blame. I don’t think it’s about blame. I think the Internet is incredibly poorly designed. Rather than being free, everything on it should cost something in order to compensate creators."

"You can’t single out Google just because it’s the largest digital company. Patch, for example, invested hundreds of millions into journalism in the US and continues to search for the model that will work going forward. There are many who are investing in the future of journalism."
