NDM #15: Football clubs take on Facebook with new social media network

Approximately, 20 football clubs around the world have joined together to make a brand new social media platform that focuses on the subject of Football. Some of the clubs involved are Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Juventus.

The site Dugout.com will offer football fans exclusive and personalised content 24hrs before it is posted on general social media pages. Dugout's objective is to build a social media website where football fans can engage with individuals players of teams as well as have numerous ways in which the users can interact with the platform. The exclusivity deal could be a heart-breaker for sites such as Facebook because this subject brings in many users to their website and now that clubs will start marketing this website, many users may be drawn away from original social media sites.
The actual positives of owning your own social media platform is that it will offer the company more insight in to users and access that Facebook would probably give them and the fact that there is no external links is also a good factor, as this is solely football based.

This idea of moving away from traditional communication platforms has also been captured by the presenters of 'The Grand Tour'. Clarkson, May and Hammond have also set up a new website called Drivetribe.com which has similarities to the new football site since it is solely based on Vehicles and encourages users to post and create content based inside 'tribes' where people can build a following about their interest in the vehicle industry - as a whole, they are creating a secondary social media within it. The main difference between the 2 websites is that Drive Tribe uses Facebook integration to operate the website and forces users sign into Facebook to use it and doesn't offer alternatives like Dugout does. In general though, both look scarily similar even though they are not competing as both have totally different demographic groups.

  • Dugout.com, which has also signed partnerships with more than 150 players including Gareth Bale, Alexis Sanchez, Edinson Cavani, Joe Hart and Neymar, launches globally on Monday in eight languages.
  • The company would not reveal the shareholder structure, but senior executives of seven clubs – PSG, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea – are listed as directors, according to filings at Companies House.
