Chris Evans' Radio 2 breakfast show has lost 400,000 listeners due to his take-over of the popular TV show, Top Gear which renewed him as the new presenter after the previous presenters have left over conflict with the shows producer.
Evans left Top Gear on 4th July after incredible hatred from both the media and viewers of the show since he lacked the very well known relationship and on-screen drama of the previous presenters: Hammond, Clarkson and May who build up the show from the ground since 1997. It is obvious that this negativity has been an influence of the listeners of Radio 2. Furthermore, sexual allegations being leaked about Evans making him a bad public figure and therefore turning away many people.
Statistics:
- BBC Radio 1 (Early morning show): Decline of 200,000 listeners.
- BBC Radio 1 (General): Incline of 400,000 listeners.
- BBC Radio 1 YouTube Channel: 1.5 million daily views
- BBC Radio 1 Social Media stats: 8.5 million users.
- BBC Radio 2 (Early morning show): Decline of 400,000 listeners.
- BBC Radio 2 (General): Decline of 150,000 listeners.
- BBC Radio 3 (Early morning show): Decline of 172,000 listeners.
- BBC Radio 4 (Today programme): Decline of 200,000 listeners.
These results are quite predictable. It is obvious that this generation of people, especially teenagers will be less interested in traditional media such as Radio and therefore the decrease will be there and for those that are adults, would most likely move to modern media such as online streaming even play radio style content through platforms like Spotify or YouTube. In my own opinion, I prefer Spotify's radio selection because it is catered towards my music choice as it collects data about what I listen to and then generates a suitable Radio playlist and reccommendations unlike traditional radio which plays the Top 50 playlists.
