Britain is seeing an increasing of users in the country using digital streaming platforms such as Netflix and Twitter. The revenue for these services has had an increase of 23% brings the year of 2016 to £1.3 billion. This does not however mean that TV services are dead: music, TV shows, films and video games brought in £6.3 billion last year for Britain.
The up-rise of digital content made high street sales of physical items such as DVDs and Blu-Ray discs fall 17% to a total of £894 million in revenue. 2016 is the first year the sales have fallen from the £1bn mark. The rental market has also fallen by 21% to £49 million.
- Digital sales rose 2.2% to £2.25bn, with the biggest seller of the year Star Wars: The Force Awakens with sales of 2.3m.
- Netflix currently has 6 million paying subscribers in Britain.
- Downloads and streaming accounted for over 57% of the music market in 2016.
- Services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer have subscription revenues increasing by 65% to £418m.
