Channel 4 News defended their decision on live-streaming a conflict and battle in Mosul on the Facebook Live feed. Channel 4 worked along side TV stations Al-Jazeera, Rudaw and the Kurdish news agency which all contributed their own live-stream footage of Iraqi troops and Kurdish fighrters into Mosul.
The footage was seen by more that 500,000 people on Facebook by midday 18th October and recieved mixed responses from people saying that the Facebook intergration of emojis and 'liking' has made this event in to something that shouldn't be taken seriously.
A spokesman at Channel 4 replied to the comments with: a digital editor was assigned to make editorial “judgment calls” on the footage and switch it off if warranted. Asked about the use of emojis she said: “That’s part and parcel of the FB live package. The benefit for us is the immediacy.”
What this article questions is the interactive side of news via live-streaming and generally the publishing of serious news on social media sites such as Facebook. Even though the use of liking and emojis on posts helps institutions monitor how people are feeling in the moment, it is some-what unenthical and I think Facebook should allow the feature to enabled or disabled in the decision of the poster. However I don't think Facebook will roll-out this feature since this new interactive menu allows facebook to determine post ranking and collect even more data about people which they can use for their purposes.
