NDM #6: 'Jessica Jones' hires all female directors for season two

Melissa Rosenberg, the creator of Jessica Jones expressed her views on filming the second season of Jessica Jones and explained that she wanted to have more female directors. TV shows have multiple directors who follow the creators vision and stylise the show essentially in comparison to traditional films which for most part stick with the same Director in franchises. Marvel Studios heard what Rosenberg had to say and backed her on the decision so she and her producer have booked women directors who were already available for the production and male directors later in the process.

Rosenberg also explained:  “When I interview a writer, I’m less interested in what you’ve been doing professionally than I am in where you’re from, what your parents do, what’s your life experience, what are you bringing to the table personally?”
This shows that the creator really cares on the representation of woman in this show since she is looking to bring realistic ideologies of woman and their past experiences instead of producing fictional writing that was just an idea. “I don’t want a bunch of people who look and sound [like me] and have the experiences I have.” - Rosenberg is trying to bring unique screenplays to this show by collaborating with as many creators as possible and this is what constructs a fantastic final product which audiences have already seen in the first season that told a pitch-dark narrative, full of secrets.

  • From September through December, the average episode of Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” averaged 4.8 million viewers in adults 18-49 during a 35-day viewing cycle, according to Wurtzel’s presentation.
  • The Netflix series was praised by critics for its realistic female protagonist, portrayal of female friendship, and handling of sexual assault and rape.
